Post-Jam Update now live! - Heir of the Dog




HEIR OF THE DOG POST-JAM UPDATE!

Spring 2D Jam is now over and it was a blast! I managed to submit my game in a "finished" and playable state in time, but it was definitely rough and needed some polish. There was a few minor bugs and annoying little issues, and level 3 was super rushed and was not up to standard. I received a lot of useful feedback from fellow jammers and decided to develop the game a bit further and release a post-jam update.

I have done another 10-or-so hours over 5 days. I'm now really happy with the quality of the game and will move onto my next project. Here's a list of changes! :)

ART:

  • Added undersides to tiles in all levels
  • Added shadow tiles
  • Double-checked Z orders gamewide
  • Added additional level art for all levels e.g plant pots, flowers, clutter, tools
  • Made new unique animation frames for end of game e.g Rory with a crown on, Baron Blackbird smiling
  • Edited dog sprite to look more like the real Rory when idle i.e changed her ears to floppy
  • Added more particle effects e.g when destroying enemies
  • Made background/platforms easier to tell apart in level 3
  • Fixed some Z order issues
  • Added screen fade transition with moving between levels/scenes

AUDIO:

  • Increased volume of ambient audio on levels 1 and 3
  • Added fade-out/in of music and ambient audio when transitioning between levels/scenes
  • Adjusted volume of various SFX, e.g lowered bark volume
  • Added SFX for Baron Blackbird speaking + flying away
  • Added/edited SFX for colliding with enemies, destroying enemies etc.
  • Fixed bug of missing music at end and on restarting game

LEVEL DESIGN:

  • Moved log in level 3 so you can't jump back up before you're meant to
  • Also the log now stops you from going back down into the level after collecting the 3rd treat
  • Added more hazards in level 3
  • Edited enemy placement in level 3
  • Added more smashable objects to level 3
  • Tweaked onion enemy behaviour to be more exciting/challenging
  • Overhauled level 3 design/layout to be more exciting/challenging
  • Added a "secret" area in level 2 and hid an easter egg there (the frog from my game The Potion Commotion is chillin' there!)

OTHER / GENERAL / BUG FIXES:

  • Made sure all tutorial text bobs up and down on all levels
  • Added mobile controls and UI buttons
  • Shortened dialogue with Baron Blackbird on levels 1 and 2
  • Made fancy end screen (e.g Baron celebrates, crown appears, music + screen fades)
  • Fixed bug of Baron Blackbird missing animations in level 2
  • Made Rory run off-screen when completing a level
  • Fixed bug of being able to sometimes overlap enemies without being damaged
  • Moved/resized some text boxes to look nicer and use space better
  • Improved take-damage and death behaviour e.g added flashing and temporary shield when taking damage, added fade out before respawning when dying
  • Improved dialogue with Baron Blackbird in level 3
  • Optimised event usage and cleaned up code (a bit...)
